Dangerous Eye Symptoms

Sudden Loss of Vision -Central Retinal Artery or Vein Occlusion

Floaters and/or Flashing Lights - Retinal Detachment

Double Vision

Severe Pain in the Eye (Especially After Intraocular Surgery)

Central Retinal Artery and Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRAO) (CRVO)

On the dangerous symptoms list is sudden loss of vision. If this occurs it is extremely important to get attention immediately. This is especially important if the cause is a blood vessel stoppage. It is mandatory that this be attended to within the shortest possible time. Many times permanent loss of vision can be avoided. An emergency room visit is justified.

The retina lies in the back of the eye. It is a multi-layer tissue responsible for detecting visual images and transmitting these to the brain. The retina is similar to the film inside a camera. A retinal detachment occurs when the retina pulls away from the back of the eye.

A variety of visual anomalies result from retinal detachment. These include flashing lights, an apparent covering or curtain over part of the visual field or the presence of several 'floaters' in the field of vision . Importantly, these symptoms can also be present without a retinal detachment. An immediate exam is necessary if you experience any of the above symptoms. If it happens in the middle of the night, it is OK to wait until the morning to call, but no longer.

Sometimes the retina does not fully detach, but only tears. In these cases, treatment is usually done with a laser or a freezing technique called cryotherapy or cryopexy that seals the tear. If the retina is fully detached, surgery is performed to place the retina back into position.

Double Vision

Double vision can be a very serious condition. It also can be very benign. If you have a sudden onset of double vision you should probably go to an emergency room.

The causes can be anything from eye strain or fatigue to diabetes to the wrong glasses to brain tumors.

Severe Pain in the Eye (Especially after Intraocular Surgery)

Bacterial endophthalmitis is a true ophthalmic emergency. It means that the inside of the eye has become infected with bacteria, usually within fife days after surgery.

Most of the time in this situation the vision cannot be salvaged , but not always, if it is caught very early.

The first symptoms are eye pain and/or loss of vision.
