Pingueculum and Pterygium (Yellow Spots)

Pinguecula and pterygia are very common. They are the result of the ultraviolet rays of the sun on unprotected eyes as well as wind and dust exposure. The more unprotected sun you receive, the more likely you are to get these benign growths. We see and operate many of these every year on mission trips to Mexico. Generally, they are benign.

Initially a pingueculum forms. It is a little yellow bump on the surface of the eye nearly always in-between the open lids.

With more sun exposure the pingueculum progresses to a pterygium. This means that the corneal surface has been invaded.
