Diabetes

The major cause of blindness in the United States is:

Diabetes is a disorder which can dramatically alter sight. Diabetes can cause cataracts and hemorrhaging inside the eye.

Cataracts, of course, can be treated with cataract surgery and lens implantation.

Bleeding can, many times, be helped with laser surgery.

We tell patients who have diabetes that they are in control of their own destiny. If they keep their blood sugar in good control, below 150 or less, they have a good chance of living a normal life with normal longevity. If they donít keep their blood sugar in good control they are likely to have problems with eye, kidney, and small blood vessel disease.

One of the major success stories of the Twentieth Century was the development of laser surgery to treat eye disease, and represents one of the first uses of lasers in medicine. Other surgeries that may be necessary include vitrectomy.

A new treatment that may have promise is the use of medications which inhibit the production of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor).

A new and novel treatment involves using a chemical which injected into the vascular system of the body. While it is still present, a laser is used to treat the blood vessels that might be leaking. The chemical absorbs the laser light and causes the blood vessels to be destroyed. The presence of the chemical enables a much lower amount of laser light intensity to be used. This prevents the damaging of sensitive retinal tissue that was damaged in previous laser methods
