The AREDS Study (Age Related Eye Disease Study)

Recently, the National Eye Institute (a division of the National Institutes of Health) completed a 10-year clinical study which monitored the effects of a high-potency antioxidant vitamin and mineral supplement on age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

This clinical study was conducted on a double-masked, placebo-controlled group consisting of 3,609 people ages 55 to 80, to demonstrate the effectiveness of a high-potency vitamin and mineral supplement on the preservation of eye health and vision. Its findings clearly prove that a unique high-potency supplement of antioxidant vitamins and zinc can actually slow the progression of moderate to advanced AMD and its associated vision loss.

In fact, when taking this supplement, those most at risk for developing advanced AMD significantly decreased that risk by about 25% and also reduced the risk of vision loss caused by advanced AMD, by about 19%.

There are a number of vitamin combinations available. The one prescribed the most by us is ICaps with Lutein. We recommend three tablets taken with breakfast.

Since macular degeneration is primarily a light related phenomenon, it is important that the medication be "On Board" during the daylight hours.
