Wave Front technology was originally developed for use in high powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space, or when looking from space to the surface of Earth.

This technology has now been applied to laser vision correction, and represents a significant advance in refractive surgery.

The way this is determined uses an undamaging laser light. It is is projected through the pupil to inside the eye. When it is reflected back from the retina through the pupil to the outside (similar to the red eye reflex from cameras), it should be a flat plane. Our eyes are not perfect, and there is always some distortion of the plane. The wave that comes out may be shaped like a potato chip, a three cornered hat, or even more complex shapes. It might look like this picture.

The system processes this information in a computer and up to over 200 separate refractions, (depending on pupil size) are done across the wave or wave front. The computer then calculates the right amount of treatment to make the potato chip or three cornered hat like wave into more of a flat plane (like a pane of glass).

When you get a regular glasses prescription only one refraction is done compared to the 28  to 200 for wave front laser treatment

A sample treatment might look like this on the computer printout.

The oblong character of the square next to the green block represents astigmatism and higher order aberrations.

The S4 system that we use has:
  • Variable Spot Scanning
  • •3-D tracker technology with automatic centering
  • •Tissue sparing algorithms
  • •Fast treatment times
  • •A reliable system

    Smallest Spot Size

This laser system is the most up-to-date and modern method used in this country. It is also the laser system that is used by most laser surgeons in the US.

This might help understand the irregularities of the wave front, with the treatment profile projected onto the pupil.
