Clear Lens Extraction or Refractive Lens Exchange

Another option for refractive surgery that can be very beneficial for hyperopic patients and very nearsighted patients is clear lens extraction. In this surgery the lens is removed in the same way as in the cataract operation, and a lens implant with the correct power is placed inside the remaining lens "capsular bag". This eliminates the variability of hyperopic LASEK, LASIK, or PRK. In those patients who have too much nearsightedness for these procedures, it can be a strong alternative.

There are now lens implants that correct vision for distance and near vision at the same time. These include the "Restore" (Alcon Surgical), Resume (Advanced Medical Optics (AMO)), and the Crystalens (Eyonics).

The "Restore" lens implant uses a method called diffractive optics. This method has been used in clarifying images in space and presumably from space on the ground. This lens implant is weighted for distance and a 10-14 inches near point.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The "ReZoom" lens implant uses refractive optics. This is the method used in spectacles. This lens is weighted for distance and intermediate vision such as computer monitor distance.

 

The "Crystalens" implant uses the principal of foreword and rearward movement inside the eye, creating a difference in focal points.
